Dec 6, 2016
hello ,
where has the time gone ?
here it is the end of 2016.... Christmas tree is up , two in fact. One by the front window with the usual bulbs & old memories. white lights & silver beads. The tree skirt I sewed 20 yrs ago is no worse for wear. the old antique Santa stands proudly between the wall & the tree , don't know where his light deal is ?
The tree was blessed , just today , with a new angel topper , it was really a steal at the local thrift shop :-)
The second is a woodland tree , standing about 6 feet tall , no lights, just standing tall with my grandfather's ornaments adoring each skinny branch.. I happened to run across the history of the 1940 bulbs , they started out as a German company & then WW2 broke out , that ended the production, or at least the importing to the US . An American company picked up the process & soon they were in every home. I LOVE the bulbs. some have Merry Christmas written on a red ball in white lettering. others are plain & tiny , about the size of a grape. of course the tear drops come in all colors & hues.
the tree didn't always stand in the dining room, most of it's life in our home was spent in front of the patio doors in the kitchen, covered in my mom's old cookie cutters & perhaps it will find it's way back there next year, but for now.. it seems happy in front of the corner hutch :-)
our Youngest daughter has been working at our county welcome center, they offer state travel advice & hand out a lot of free info . They are known for the Cherry Drink around this part of the state, she will offer you a sample if you stop by.
You wouldn't think this tiny , off the interstate info center & historical village would see a lot of world travelers, but they sure do. She is excited every time a family from Ireland ,Germany or England makes their way to her counter. The 'miles from home' visitors are always eager to tell their story & she is always eager to listen :-) Of course their stories are as different as the cities & villages they come from. she was very taken by a young Irishman , his accent she told me later was SO wonderful :-)
she also is just as happy to welcome US visitors. Bikers ,who strap everything needed to see the country onto their skinny bikes stop in for maps . Grandparents traveling with their grandkids to see the USA are always interesting :-) If you find yourself on the west 'coast ' of Iowa stop by, the Cherry Drink is always waiting.
well enough for today.
Please leave a comment below if you have enjoyed this bit of my story.
until next time.. May Our Lord richly Bless YOU .

Wow.. where has the time gone.
it has been ages since I posted anything.
I don't know where I left off.
the biggest thing to happen in our family is the going HOME of my mother..
Alice May (McElderry ,Smith) Wede Born Dec 5th 1925
went home to be with the Lord : May 4th 2013.
Has it been a year since I heard her voice ? or held her frail body to help her sit down or get up ? Has it been a year since she talked about wanting to go Home ? As I teared up she handed me a tissue & looked at me with caring eyes , as if to say.. What's the matter ?
she was a Wonderful Christian woman & she Knew where she was going.
Has it been a year since I did her washing ( & Hollered cuz I missed a tissue & all her clothes were covered in white fluff ! )
Has it really been 12 months since I said, Love you Mom , see you tomorrow as I walked out of her nursing home room ?
Has it been two years since she lived here with my family & I had to coach her on using her walker & " Keep your head up Mom " as she carefully walked through my dining room to her room? When I had to sneak food to her :-) has it been two years since she said , " "Oh, Lisa , no.. I couldn't eat that " . but I ignored her & before long she had managed to down the sandwich & Ensure drink :-)
Have two years passed since she fell & skinned her arm ? since she learned she could no longer drive her car ? two YEARS , really ?
Has it been 2 years since my heart skipped a beat every time she was unsteady and I was afraid she'd fall ?
Have two years passed since I had her lay on the couch & I covered her head to toe with blankets ? she said , "Lisa, you are more like my mother then my daugher.. " I waited. She finished with a smile, "But thats ok " .
Has it been three years since she lived in her own home of 25 yrs ?
Has it been three years since she called & asked.. "are you home ?"
& then drove out for supper ? we would dash around & pick up the house of the lazy Sunday newspapers & shoes piled by the door :-)
Has it been longer still since she mowed her own lawn & planted & weeded her garden ? proudly showing off her tomatoes & flowers ?
Has it been a life time ?
yes.
Mom kept journals since 1956.. it is my honor to fulfill her wishes & copy them for the remaining siblings. The first books she used were Dad's from his days of selling Hail Insurance.
The sections she wrote about her daily life are small, 2 x 2 inches. But they are a life time. The price of groc. & the car payment :-) Who came to visit ( & there was ALWAYS a lot of company !) Dr. visits .. school picnics & sunday School . The deaths of friends.. the births of children & grandchildren. The running of the farm & the moves to new homes.
as my youngest daughter , Gracie & I read through some we noticed a theme running through. No matter the day.. be it stormy or sunny, a super busy day doing washing or the after noon visiting friends.. & shopping she ended most entries with :
" It was a very nice day ".
She was not perfect. no one but Christ is .. but she tried.. she was caring, she loved... We argued at times .. but that is life..
I hope if you still have your mother that you will kiss her more often.. speak kindly & don't argue :-) cuz does it really matter in the great scheme of things ?
If your Mom has gone Home too.. I hope you have good memories to see you through .............
Blessings, lisa

Sunny & cold this morning .. thankfully we don't have to go anywhere ..
Tuesday I have a teeth cleaning , not a bad thing for sure. but hate to be exposed to sick people :-)
what are you doing to stay healthy ?
eating healthier , vitamins, washing hands often, using anti virus gels ? do you wipe the cart handles at the stores & do you stay out of the stores as much as possible ?
I know when states put out a Epidemic warning , it's simply to allow the shots to go to certain groups of people.. usually the young & elderly .. makes sense.
Hubby reminded me last night that he hasn't been sick for 6 yrs ! wow..
I had forgotten that, good for him.
I do all of the above to some degree.. the Vits I take are : multi Vit , vit D .. plus I drink the lemon water every morning.. not sure that has anything to do with it. but it makes me feel good. always yogurt .. :-)
comment to this post with your hints & I will draw for a surprise gift :-0
hint: knit item :=) I will draw from the names next Monday :-) the 21st .
Hope you have a great day !

it was a nice day :-)
hello,
more about mom :-)
My Mom who turned 87 Dec. 5th 2012 has moved into the nursing home. she knows it is the safest place for her.. even here I couldn't be awake all night to stop her from falling.. SO it is with a heavy heart I relent & she goes in.
She is making the best of it .. that's all we can ever ask.
I know , she is elderly. I see it in other people's eyes.. I know
her memory is not good enough to see her through a day alone.
I know her days here on earth are short . ( I KNOW heaven awaits).
I KNOW.. in my brain.. but my heart.. ?
it's still my mom, the mom that taught be drive at 13 down an old dirt road in the 1970's green pick-up :-)
The mom who taught me to crochet, sew , do laundry & scrub toilets :-)
the mom who stood by me when my mistake gave me a baby at 17:-)
The same mom that told me to Stand up Straight.. mind my manners & to
respect my elders..
The same mom that taught me to say my prayers,
& when others seem to desert me.. He is always there.
So I KNOW !! but it's hard .
hard to relinquish her to old age & allow others to do her daily care .
As I touched on the other day :
Grace & I are entering her journals into our computer.. what a task ! I think the oldest ones were circa 1940's :-) I have yet to find them all. SO we are starting with 1962 .
My father, Lavern Smith , worked at the grain elevator in the 50s & 60s & he also sold Hail Insurance, he didn't use the yearly calendars .. so he gave them to mom.
each day section is small.. so she didn't have space to day dream or write extensively.
just enough each day to give her story.
As Grace read them aloud & I typed on the keyboard.. she would laugh & say.. Know what Grandma said next ? I'd say no (:) she'd reply.. & it was a NICE DAY ! :-)
when , if , we ever get them completed.. I think I will title them..
"And it was a nice day.. (& a nice life:-) "
well off to do some washing. ( I can still do that for mom :-)
God Bless,
Lisa

Mom
Hello,
Well since I posted about my mom's 87th birthday party she has been living here , then in the hospital & now in the nursing home.
poor old soul.. she fell FOUR times at her apartment in just one day.
the last time the ladies on her floor called my sister , Julie ( RN) & she took her to the hospital. there they found out she had a UTI .. she was put on meds & came here on snowy cold Friday night.. mom weighed a tiny 96 pounds !
She was very ill.. & really didn't improve on the meds.
then after week she got up about 11 pm & fell/ slumped over the counter in the bathroom .. so I held her & brought her to the floor.. she let out a loud breath & her eyes were dilated.. really scary for us all.
Gracie & I put a pillow under her head & covered her in blankets.. Hubby called the unit. we patted her face & told her we loved her. I was sure this was it..
long story short.. she spent a week in the hospital , chged her meds.. gave her iron.. & fluids.. & finally got her temp down. she looked so much better & really could carry on a conversation again..
All of us kids made the hard decision to put her in the Nursing home. I would have rather had her here with family around her. but the simple act of her getting up to use the bathroom in the night was scary.. during the day she couldn't manage it with out help .. SO HOW she did it in the night was beyond me ! :-)
today grace & I went up to take a few more shirts & a pair of shoes.. she has a bright room & a wonderful room mate.. plus she is right by the nurses station :-)
she was talking well.. still wants to go home.. LOL .. but agreed that she couldn't manage alone.. I told her not to worry about it & to take it one day at a time ..
I said we can still do all the things we did before.. go for rides.. shop & all :)
she agreed..
Mom has kept a journal since about 1940 something. they are so interesting..
she had wanted us to type them all out .. LOL why ? I don't know. But grace & I are starting.. mom had given me 1962 years ago , so we started with that year.
the cute thing is.. on most days she ends with " & it was a nice day ".
I said when we are done.. we will title it , " It was a nice day " & as the subtitle it will read.. " and a Nice Life " .
well take care.. & kiss your loved ones tonight..

spinning & finished yarn
Hello,
I don't think I had posted about getting my new spinning wheel before..
I think I am getting the hang of it. still LOTS to learn.. I won't bore you with the details :-)
I had used my drop spindle for some blueish, green wool to spin the singles.
then used my wheel to ply it.. :-) after that wrpped it round the back of a chair . tied it in about 5 spots & then washed it.
it finished drying today & came out pretty bouncy.. which is fine.. I can't say exactly what size the yarn is just yet.. but currently it seems to be a cross between a dk & bulky.. :)
Here is a bit of a blurry pic to give you some idea.
have a great day !

pass this on to everyone ..
They have insulted us, used us, and manipulated us. They have saturated the black community with ridiculous lies,” he said, speaking directly to the black community. ”They think we are stupid and that these lies will hold us captive while they violate everything we believe as Christians.”
Jackson went into detail in the video, taking aim at the “unholy alliance” that he sees between Democrats, faux-civil rights leaders and Planned Parenthood.
“The Democratic Party has created an unholy alliance between certain so-called civil rights leaders and Planned Parenthood, which has killed unborn black babies by the tens of millions,” he proclaimed.
On the morality front, Jackson took issue with the party’s internal debate over “God” being dropped from its platform and derided the notion that homosexuality should be equated “with being black.“ He called the later tenet of the Democratic Party an ”outrageous lie.”
“We as Christians ought to know better. Shame on us for allowing ourselves to be sold to the highest bidder,” Jackson continued, telling his fellow black pastors that they, too, would need to make a decision between supporting Democrats and embracing Jesus.
PASS this on to everyone you know..
it has ALWAYS amazed me that Black Americans just fell head long into everything the dems told them.
this preacher gets the truth out there like no other could.

sad news yesterday
morning,
I wanted to let you all know.
yesterday afternoon my older sister Karen went to see her dd , Jeana
& found her dead in her living room . jeana was 42 .
thankfully Jeana's daughter , Brooklyn 10 yr , was at her dad's .
the medics think it was her heart.
she had had a lot of health issues since a terrible car accident years ago.
My sister & her hubby did everything for Jeana, & Brooklyn.
it is a sad time .
when my sil JoAnn walked in last evening & her & Karen hugged & cried.
it brought it all back. JoAnn had been married to my brother Dan , who died suddenly
2 yrs ago & Dan & JoAnn's Son , Rusty died 7 yrs before that in a car accident .
anyway.. it's rough.
I ask for prayers for us all. esp Brooklyn.. such a sweet little girl , she kept crying out
for her Mommie .. just heartbreaking.

Loss
Good Afternoon,
Loss..
a sad word..
a word , that when heard in relationship
to our friend's family , makes us sigh..
No one is ready for a parent / mother to die.
No matter our age OR their's.
Mothers have meant love , learning & tears.
Mothers taught us , prayed for us &
scolded us :-)
they are the ones we call with news ,First !
We spend our lives making them
proud . We spend our lives , our entire
lives with our mom just a phone call
away.
I am deeply sorry for my friend Mary.
I am sorry she has to go through this time.
We have to then use, the most important
lesson our mother's have taught us. Christ Lives.
There is real hope, Hope & faith in Christ.
yes, we will see them again without pain or fear.
Soon , I pray, the pain of immediate loss will
give way & happier times will be remembered.
Funny times & lessons learned
or Mom always said , "this or that" :)
.
That is a comfort , for Mary, for me
& I pray for you.
God Bless,
Lisa

easy ice tea
Good Morning :-)
Years & years ago I had a Ice Tea maker. yep.. they were out there.
just something to $buy$ & make tea like never before ! LOL
well ,Tea hot or cold has been brewed for centuries, but I bought into the 'better mouse trap" trap..
I can't remember what happened to it now.. hum......maybe on the last
move I must have ditched it.. ( I Hate 'machines' sitting on the kitchen
counters).
I do make Hot tea,, no special equip needed :-)
Coffee? yep, but in an OLD non electric coffee pot.. I do have to use
electricity to boil the water ..LOL.. but then I just pour the hot water
over the grounds & wait.. it's really no slower then other coffee makers.
The other day I had boiled water in a pan & threw in tea bags.. let it
steep a while & then poured it into a pitcher & added ice.
A light bulb went off in my head ( Don't you just love it when that happens )
I realized.. ALL I had to do was boil water in my Sunbeam ( just boils water)
pour over 8 tea bags in a pitcher.. steep.. remove the tea bags & fill the
pitcher with ICE ! :- ) Cool.. just like the old machine used to do & at
no 'new' cost to me :-)
that's my Aw HA ! moment for the week :-)
A homeschool mom we know is going in for an MRI Thursday.
she has had terrible headaches in the back of her head..
her hubby called the ER last Sunday night.. they told her it was probably
just a migraine.. SO on Monday she called her Dr. & over the PHONE
she was told to get an MRI on Thursday. & that it was probably a TUMOR
or an Aneurysm ! HELLO ! ??? On one should be told that OVER the phone .. & so then what.. continue life as normal? drive the car? be alone with the kids ? who knows what could happen ? ! Her headaches aren't as bad this week, but she is driving her kids around for their appointments as stuff.
but gee ! I just can't believe a Dr would make such a statement over the phone..
SHe used to be our dr too..
well that is our excitement for the day..
hope you are all doing well ..
please comment if you read this far.. I like to know this is more then a private journal & someone reads it :-)
also post info about YOUR blog.. I'd love to see what you are doing too.

stain remover.
Stain remover , from ehow..
& sunny simple life :-)
So here it is:
Homemade Laundry Stain Remover
1 part Ammonia
1 part dish soap ( It called for Dawn but I had Joy, worked fine)
1 part water.
I just mixed in an old stain remover bottle.
Edit to add that I spray on and toss in on mild stains but I bring out the big scrub brush for tough stains. And a WARNING do not mix with bleach. Ammonia and bleach make a reaction that is very bad so I do not use this in a bleach load. Thanks to a reader for reminding me of this. I knew this but wanted to make sure you all do to. I have never had a problem but wanted to share this.

Great blogs to ck out & a bit more .
Hello,
it's a beautiful morning here on the west coast of Iowa :-)
cooool , which we love ! after record setting highs ALL summer & the Drought ! wow ! we can sure use the cooler weather , our chickens & yard are thankful too..
to keep the ckens somewhat cool this summer, we put frozen water bottles in their waterers.. I can't stand to think of an animal unable to get water.. so we had several pans around the yard too..
I was reading some great blogs this morning.. wow, some young women are just so talented , like http://sunnysimplelife.blogspot.com/ with some great links to other bloggers .. so many ideas , so little time ..
one gal I like to read had others commenting about selling your produce from your back yard.. one lady said her neighbors were fined 5,000 for doing so..
I know that some cites are forbidding growers donations to shelters & even the homeless on the streets ! Don't you just LOVE BIG GOV . ? NOT !
another commenter said you weren't allowed to sell canned products w/o a kitchen inspection ( GOV) & a licence (GOV) ..
I commented to her that in most states ( so far :-) , if you sell DIRECTLY to the consumer , you do NOT have to be licensed.. or have a kitchen inspection..
I'm sure if we get ( God Please NO !) 4 more years of this communist prez. we won't be able to sell anything Anywhere !
But on a lighter note.. Gracie is driving ! she forgets most days that she can drive & doesn't go out much.. But I know once the routine of Fall & classes elsewhere, she will be running her car ragged I'm sure. My mom is 86 & unable to drive. So she gave her car to Gracie.. :-) VERY nice of her for sure !
we are off to purchase some kitchen groceries for the church & hopefully do a bit of shopping for tote making :-)
God Bless, & Have a great day !

Happy 4th !
Happy INDEPENDENCE DAY AMERICA !! :-)
As you may remember this time last year by Mom , Alice, was still living here .
The weather was NOT as hot a year ago, so we all went to our local county Parade.
The parade was the typical American parade.. ( With a lot of BOOING when the Dems drove by , first time in my life I had seen that. guess people clingin' to their guns & Bibles aren't real found of O / Dems )
We all enjoyed our seats in the shade watching the floats & chattin' with those we rarely get to visit with . We had lunch of hamburgers & chips on the grounds .. & came home to a bit of TV , a lot of dessert & a nap before hitting the pool in the afternoon.
but this year ? Nope..
Mom is content to stay put this year.. she said it is too hot.. her apartment is cool & besides the managers are grilling & so her hamburger will be served to her :_)
we aren't going either, first time in years. it feels a bit like playing hooky from church .LOL, but then again it is suppose to be 101 F on the west coast of Iowa today with probably 80% humidity . just plain soup !
The Chickens are surviving the heat , bless 'em. With about 25 NEW chicks, the Mums are pretty busy keeping track of them during the day & of course defending them from this mean old lady bringing in food & water ! GEEZ ! Anybody (Gray Mother cken ) is a VERY protective Mum . talk about biting the hand that feeds ya ?
I put Ice in their water in the form of frozen ice bottles.. they have plenty of shade around the yard , under the fir trees & in the line of tall trees round the south of the coop. We are VERY happy that we spent the time & Money putting in a 12 foot tall fence round the coop & expanding it size this spring.. it allows us to leave the coop door open & shut the yard door. The Ckens then cool off as much a "chickenly" possible :-) thank heavens !
Hubby is going to cook on the smoker today, youngest dd, Gracie is going to bake a jello cake , so I am taking the day off ! :-) ( yea..right :-) LOL
Well take care , stay cool , drink plenty of WATER & hug your family :-)
Lisa
PS Knitting must still be done .. :_)

Not sure I shared this http://www.justapinch.com/groups/browse/list web site with you before but it is sure fun to look through. seems just about ANY recipe you are in need of can quickly be found here. Sign up & get to know some ladies.. I think it is fun to talk to other homemakers/ cooks from other parts of the country..
Our hens have been spending their spring sittin' on eggs..:-)
& with great succuess.. we now have 14 more to add to the flock . & thankfully
all good 'mother hens " :-) we're hoping for more hens then roos, hens to lay eggs to sell but then roos would be nice in the freezer. IF we don't name 'em all :-)
Just cking in & hoping you all are having a great day & perhaps a bit of a cat nap to..
Lisa

seems 3 of the 4 are sewing related.. who knew !?
Jena & I are playing with the idea of a video added once a month.
I have always enjoyed podcast. audio or video. I can listen to audio while cleaning house or knitting. I love to watch videos while crafting in my craft room..
but one thing that really bugs me is : the video p-casts show U what they have worked on ( Knit ) but rarely show you DOING a project.
Now, U can go online & watch a gazillion video 'how toos' for sure. but what about combining both worlds ? we're kicking around the idea anyway.
Have a great day ! Lisa

coconut oil for health :-) & must read
http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/healthscience/2012/January/Coconut-Oil-Touted-as-Alzheimers-Remedy/
Hello, Me again.. :-)
My daughter , Daisha has a neighbor with Alzheimers, so she told the husband about coconut oil & the Christian web site (CBN.com) with a video & article about the benefits of coconut oil.
I wanted to pass on the info to you all , so it you know anyone that has alzheimers or even a strong family leaning , you can pass on the info to them.
it has even shown benefits for some with demintia .
I say if it helps a bit or even stops the progression in it's tracks.. it's worth it . esp something as gentle & healthy as coconut oil..
( And to think our lovely FDA took it out of movie theatres b/c they thought it was bad ! Wow.. love the Gov . )
A small excert from the article & video :

Alternative Brain Fuel
In this case, insulin problems prevent brain cells from accepting glucose, their primary fuel. Without it, they eventually die.
But there is an alternative fuel -- ketones, which cells easily accept. Ketones are metabolized in the liver after you eat medium chain triglicerides, found in coconut oil.
Dr. Newport added coconut oil to her husband Steve's diet. Just two weeks later, he took the clock test again and demonstrated stunning improvement.
"I thought at the time, was it just good luck? Was it a lot of prayer? Was it the coconut oil?" she said. "And I thought, well, we're going to keep the coconut oil going."
Three weeks later, Steve took the clock test a third time and continued to perform better on it.
And it wasn't just intellectually, he also improved emotionally and physically.
"He was not able to run. He was able to run again," she recalled. "He could not read for about a year and a half, but after two or three months he was able to read."
beautiful day
Hello,
Jena had her dance recital this past sat.. it was fun & the 6 girls in her group did great !
they are growing together more & more & I think that shows in their dancing.
because of recital , Daisha & Max came up & stayed until today.
we had a nice time , daisha & I laughed a lot working on craft projects for the sale..
Max made sure to keep jena & Grandpa busy , staying on the montra "Grandpa , we HAVE to get the pool up !" LOL
while daisha was here we worked on craft & sewing projects for the sale we're going to get a table at.. our town has a city wide garage sale Father's Day week end . our comunity center offered crafters tables inside that day too.. so we thought , Why not ?
So after D & M went home I cleaned , ran the sweeper & put loads of clothes on the line . our weather is super today.. 78 , a north wind & lots of sun :-)
picture perfect for sure. perfect day for clothes on the line :-)
I have a beef roast in the crk pot with pot. & Onion..
I made blender Yeast rolls , their rising in the microwave ..
I also made a pineapple upside down cake .
When you're out of all easy foods, milk, bread & hamb. you have to put more work into it. I should have made this when daisha was here.. but I wanted to just be.. not be in the kitchen .. I wanted to craft & just have fun.. & I think we did .. LOL
well off to ck the rolls.. & the cake.
Hope everyone is having a great day too !

aren't those boys the cutiest & don't look a bit devilish do they ? LOL they were both wore out from playing together all day :_)

waiting to get busy :-)
Hello,
it's a cloudy , somewhat chilly morning here in Iowa. we need the rain tho, so not complaining..
rainy days are just made for baking & I have plenty of that to do.
what are you baking for Easter Dinner ?
will you be attending church this Easter? if you haven't been, now would be a good time to start or
re-start.. :-) Speaking of church.. J Grace sang for the Cross of Roses program last night. my aunt told her she gave her goosebumps ! :-) I know I wouldn't ever get on stage & sing , alone . thankfully J-Grace loves to , even tho it makes her nervous/ excited . ( before testing she made up the word: excitvous. :-) The Cross of Roses program was SO good. really made you feel like you were there . Wonderfully led by our churches retired pastor. just something about an old time pastor & the cross !
as I 'wait' to get things done round here , I have been cking other blogs. which are SO time consuming .. well you'll see once you click on a link .
This one has a a super easy Apple Leather recipe .

Wonderfully led by our churches retired pastor. just something about an old time pastor & the cross !
